This is Part 2 of a 3-part series on n how to prepare and protect your family with your guns when you life depends on it:
I encourage you to start at the beginning because I’m asking you to read all three blog posts.
Part 2 [You Are Here]
Does this sound familiar?
Making fun of disaster movies comes easy…
Because hey, you’re sitting in your comfortable sofa at home surrounded by your beloved family or friends and have plenty of popcorn and beer to enjoy, right?
What you’re forgetting though is that natural disasters like the devastation of New Orleans by Hurricane Katrina are a solid proof we are just three hot meals away from anarchy.
No matter if we’re talking about floods that erase entire city blocks, earthquakes that level buildings or tornadoes that take out power plants, these things are real and can happen at any given moment. In these types of emergency situations, it’s best that you collect as much food, water and medications as you can to survive for at least a few days.
But hey, “to collect” is such a civilized verb to use, when in real life this is called “looting”.
Okay, you may have a first wave of civilized people who will go to their nearest supermarket, buy as much food as they can fit in their car and then get the heck out of there. But what happens when the second wave of people arrives?
Well, they won’t be as polite and they’ll more likely start looting everything they can, getting their much needed provisions and leaving. Very important in such situations are guns, since holding a gun in someone’s face is a much more effective way of “convincing” him to give you his food.
But how can you store your guns so that no one else has access to them?
1. Use a gun safe
Obviously, a safe is one of the first places where you can store guns, since they are not only out of the reach of children, but they can only be accessed by those who have the right combination of numbers or code.
Yet with advantages come disadvantages as well.
For instance, a burglar may decide to break into your house at 2 AM in the morning – it can happen – and this means you have little time to go get your gun from the safe. And what if the safe is downstairs where he may happen to be?
Kind of leaves you with few choices to consider.
But hey, let’s not make this sound like having a safe for storing your guns is a bad idea. On the contrary, it’s a great idea for the previously enumerated reasons and more. A good way to fix this is to ensure the safe is in the same room where you sleep. This way, you can wake up and open it in a jiffy, access your guns and then face the burglar.
As the head of the family, you certainly know how to use a gun, but does the rest of your family know how to fire a pistol or maybe a shotgun?
Therefore, you need to take each family member to a firing range where they can learn how to shoot the exact type of gun you have at home.
Do this as soon as possible and you can expect them to develop the necessary skills to use the gun in situations that call for extreme vigilance.
2. Sinks and toilets
Did you ever stop for a minute and think of your sinks and toilets as a very good place where you can hide various things?
For instance, you can always seal your gun in a waterproof plastic bag and then leave it under the toilet tank. In fact, I bet you’ve seen this in a lot of movies by now since it’s such a classic move. You can be stealthier if you want by opting for using your bathroom sink.
These are usually quite large and provide you with great coverage. For example, if you look in the front, the majority of bathroom sinks feature a decorative fake drawer and they can slide to the right or to the left of the actual plumbing. Many manufacturers don’t even bother to do this and that is why you can easily put a really shallow drawer in front of the sink bowl.
As a result, you’ll have plenty of space for hiding a gun between the fake decorative drawer and the sink and you know what? It’s very hard to tell something is hidden there, since it’s protected by the combination of awkward accessibility and darkness.
Better yet, you can call a handyman and tell him to make you a floating platform that fits the shape of your front cabinet and that of your sink. Next, all you need to do is make sure you carefully suspend it from the underside of your sink.
3. Your basement
Your basement is one of the biggest rooms in your house and since it’s generally full of useless stuff you don’t need around the house (let’s just face the fact most basements are messy as hell) hiding a gun or two in it is a breeze.
But if you want to make sure your guns are even safer from prying eyes, then you need to take a better look at the piping system that goes through your basement. Many of us have exposed plumbing usually in the same room where we have our hot water heater and what this means is that you can easily set up a series of fake pipes where you can hide your guns with ease.
For example, one way to do this is to get a real pipe and then install a Y extension. The thing is that accessing your guns won’t be possible unless you break the pipe open and risk flooding the basement this way. A much better solution would be to set up a fake pipeline and then use some plastic pipes and anchor them to the ceiling, near where the real pipes emerge. Make sure the pipe is not too large, since it can make anyone looking for hidden guns in your basement feel suspicious about it.
Hiding your guns is probably one of the best ways of making sure you safe-keep that which can make the difference between being mugged of your food and other supplies necessary for survival and scaring your attackers away.
